Youngsters Square Off In U.S. Spelling Bee. On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin this week, with hundreds of youngsters competing in theuniquely American contest that has been likened to an intellectual extreme sport. The competitors, some as young as 8 years old will face a three-day obstacle course through the English language, with any of 470,000 entries in the “Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary” as fair game. More than 500 contestants from the United States and eight foreign countries will take part in the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee.
